2017-04-17  Georgia Pacific President John W. Johnston acquired control of the Sloss Furnace Company in 1887. The acquisition included a limestone quarry at Gate City and the soft ore mines in Irondale. At the turn of the 20th century, the Irondale mines were renamed after Ruffner. The Ruffner mines closed June 1, 1953.
